Heat-related deaths

Heat-related deaths are the most severe health outcome from heat exposure. Deaths directly attributable to heat are not common in Minnesota. Heat-related deaths are sometimes not identified as being caused by heat, which means that data may underestimate heat-related deaths.

Heat-related illness directly accounted for 75 deaths in Minnesota from 2000-2022. In 2001, there was a high death count, with 19 deaths due to heat-related illness.

Heat-related deaths occur in the warm summer months (May-September). Overall, from 2000 to 2022, July had the highest number of heat-related deaths (33).
